Chapter 12
âSo Mr. Sugar is our Sentinel?â Owen paced Ezraâs living room. She could tell he was having a hard time wrapping his head around everything sheâd just told him.
âI mean, I can get the witch thing, but animals having magic too ⦠this is a lot to process.â He sat down on the couch that was just a shade darker than the sand-colored walls and Mr. Sugar jumped onto his lap.
She sat beside him. âI know. Let it sink in. Tomorrow it wonât seem so wacky. I mean, once you accept the fact that magic exists, everything else wonât come as such a shock.â Sheâd already taken her own advice and let the anomalous situation become her norm.
He put his hands behind his head and leaned back. âAnd this Felix Hexman was the one who tried to kill me in the jungle?â
âHexton, and we arenât certain, yet. But thereâs a good chance.â
He whistled. âNo offense, but this would all make one hell of a front page story.â
She crossed her arms.
âI know we have to keep this a secret. But the journalist in me is going crazy.â
She frowned and bit her lower lip. Could she really trust him?
He put his arm around her. âYou are too important. This will not get out. I promise.â
She picked at her neon nail polish.
âMaybe we arenât really in danger at all. You said yourself you werenât certain about Felix.â
She twisted the emerald around her finger as sheâd so often seen Grana do. The heirloom ring made her feel protected and gave her more clarity when she turned it. âWhatever attacked you in the jungle was dark magic. So, if it wasnât him, Iâm even more concerned. I would rather know what we are dealing with.â
âI think I should stay here from now on, at least until this gets resolved. I donât want you alone.â
It was admirable he thought he could protect her. âI donât think Mr. Sugar would have it any other way.â She pointed to the sleeping cat on Owenâs lap. âThough Grana says we are safe as long as weâre on Ravenhart soil.â
âWhat are we going to do about Jace and Piper?â He paused. âI mean I have always trusted Jace, but I am not willing to trust anyone with your life, not even my best friend.â
Ezra laughed. âThatâs funny coming from you, the man who was going to expose us as witches before he even believed it to be true.â
âThat was before I realized what I jerk Iâd been. And how much you really mean to me.â
Her lips went to his and she explored his mouth with her own. Desire rushed over her body like tidal wave. Mr. Sugar jumped down and ran to the door. Owen pulled away, to her disappointment.
âDo you think he heard something?â
Ezraâs lips found his again and she whispered into his mouth, âI donât care.â
Owen put his arms around her and his hands traveled down to her breasts. His fingers found her perked nipples and she arched herself forward to welcome his advances.
